Poetry: From Preludes for Memnon

by Ashr at 12pm, June 22nd, 2008 in General

There is no doubt that poetry is emo, it goes hand in hand with the emotion, fashion, and overall stereotype. It’s so ubiquitous that we even have a whole forum dedicated to it.

In light of this I have decided to periodically post a poem or two for the blog; tell me what you think of this excerpt from Conrad Aike’s 1953 preludes series entitled “Preludes for Memnon.”

“I read the primrose and the sea

                                    and remember nothing

I read Arcturus and the snow

                                    and remember nothing

I read the green and white book of spring

                                    and remember nothing

I read the hatred in a man’s eye

                                    Lord, I remember nothing.

Hot Topic misses…

by Ashr at 3pm, June 4th, 2008 in Fashion, General, Lists

Oh yes, we all love Hot Topic, sandwiched between an Abercrombie and a Hollister, they are our shining light, our only glimmer of hope, in a mall filled with preppy and self-indulgent clothes, but the fact that they are the ubiquitous symbol of scene fashion, doesn’t mean that they haven’t had their misses…

The gold phase:

Just last season someone over at our favorite retailer decided that the words “goth” “emo” and “indie” translated as “gold” “hip hop” and “gangster” and not even our impulse to love all things shiny could save these travesties of fashion:

Three Great Bands Recording Now

by Xenomorph at 3pm, April 17th, 2008 in General, Music & Bands, Site News

After a year and a half hiatus, the popular punk band Alkaline Trio are in the recording studio making their new album Agony and Irony which is out on July 1st. The band said that that with this particular album they wanted to go ‘back to their roots’ with songs closer to their early work. Alkaline Trio also stated that the music will still be dark like 2005’s Crimson but in a different way. You can check out one of their new songs on their myspace Here

Alkaline Trio’s music was popularized by their fast tempos, additively catchy choruses, and dark themes. This included things like: Alcoholism, fire, and death. The band had been around since 1996 and if you haven’t checked them out I strongly suggest you do.

Another popular band recording are The All-American Rejects releasing their third album. They stated that they won’t try anything revolutionary and are just trying to ‘go with the flow’ with this album. AAR are trying for a more ‘real’ sound, and said they are going to make every song count. The album should be released sometime mid September if ‘all goes as planned.’

If you don’t know who the All-American Rejects are you should. The bands first album wasn’t a huge success but the song Swing Swing. The song garnered much popularity but many supposed the band was a one hit wonder. However with their second album came Dirty Little Secret. Move Along won two categories in the 2006 MTV music awards.

Finally the band Anberlin is also in the studio making an album. This will be a follow up to their 2007 Cities. Frontman Stephen Christan stated ‘Luckily, this album is gonna be the best work of our careers.’ A new contract with Universal will allow them to make the album exactly the way they want to. The album is currently unnamed but is set for August 1st.

Anberlin has released many singles including: A Day Late, Paperthin Hymn Godspeed, and The Unwinding Cable Car They’re a great band and I strongly recommend them.

Be sure to check in soon, I’ll be posting Alternative Magazines ‘100 Bands you need to know in ‘08′.

If you have any news for upcoming albums, new bands, or band break ups, PM me on the forums or send me a message on my myspace

10 must haves for an up-coming scene kid

by flowmo at 10pm, April 16th, 2008 in Lists

So you’ve been checking out the local emo scene, and think your ready to take over the local scene. Don’t worry, your not alone.

And your never going to do it without the 10 must haves for the up and coming scene kid:

Directions to the nearest thrift store1. Directions to the nearest thrift stores

Fuck abercrombie, fuck pac sun. Your going to a thrift store to get almost everything you wear from now on. That is, if you really want to be scene.

Snake Bites Piercing2. Snake Bites

Snake bites are sick! They look awesome and are totally scene. If after seeing this, you have the sudden urge to go outside and get bit by a snake, your not ready to take over the scene.

Emo Skinny Jeans3. Skinny Jeans

You want to call yourself scene? I hope you have at very least one good pair of skinny jeans. Dickeys work. OR you can learn how to make your own skinny jeans.

PETA Cruelty Free Bunny4. PETA Membership

Scene much? Well let’s see your PETA membership card. Why do you need one? Uh. Cruelty to animals is sad. It’s mean. Damn. You’ll either join PETA or straight up go vegan. Or if your really scene, say screw the animals, they don’t know what suffering is until they spend a day in your shoes. Right?

Emo Bracelets5. Flair

Okay. I have to admit, I’m watching Office Space right now. (If you have never seen it, go watch it now!) If you want to be scene, you need “flair”. Bracelets, buttons, studded belts, scarfs, all that stuff. You can get some idea’s on Emo Bucket’s galleries, so I won’t bother mentioning all the cool accessories you could go buy.

Emo Icons6. Icons

What would the world, or any myspace profile, be without emo icons. Your right. It would suck. Every up coming scene kid needs some emo icons to plaster on their profiles, as their avatars, in their sigs, anywhere and everywhere.

5 Things Every Scene Kid Needs7. The (5) Things Every Scene Kids Need

Ohh… What are the 5 things ever scene kid needs? I guess you missed our previous post. You need to go read it… now.. Come on, It’s Right Here.

8 Bit Original Nintendo Controller8. (8) Really Emo Games

I can’t think of a better way to waste my free time than playing some really emo games. Wondering what 8 of the most emo games might be? Check them out.

Emo Tattoo9. Tattoos

Expressing yourself has never been easier. Just save $100, find a reputable tattoo shop in your area, and set up an appointment for an hour of self harm. It’s like cutting yourself thousands of times in one sitting.

Digital Cameras10. A Digital Camera

Myspace mirror shots. Showing the world how scene you are. You need a digital camera. Old school looking cameras are best for mirror shots, or extremely new trendy cams. Whichever. If you don’t own a digital camera, and won’t own one for awhile, you need to make some digital-camera-having-friends with the quickness.

As always, having anything and everything on this list will never make you scene.

Emo Love: Introduction

by Ashr at 8pm, April 15th, 2008 in General

Recently the planets aligned, a white bunnie crossed my path, and I found a beautiful, caring, (and emo,) girlfriend that I can call my very own. I have no idea how this could have happened, it should have been impossible but oh well, I’m not complaining…

So, in response to the cosmic forces at work I have decided to take inspiration from my newfound experiences and write a series of pieces on emo love. I plan to write a trilogy to be released one at a time over the next week or two, so say tuned and brace yourself for all of the spine tingling, earth shattering, and heart breaking analysis of how love develops between two emos.

(oh and don’t worry I won’t subject you to stories about my love life, I’m too emo to be that mean.)

Update: I know I did say that I would post my series in a couple weeks, but I did not realize how much my AP exams would ruin my free time, I promise promise PROMISE I will get them out as soon as I can. *sincerity*

The Emo/Scene Season is Over

by ReD at 4pm, April 12th, 2008 in General

Warning: This post contains stereotyping of the word ‘Emo’. I’d advise reading ‘The difference between Scene and Emo’
to further your knowledge rather then taking what is being said here seriously.

Alas, I must partake of you all in sending such horribly dismal news.
Now, if You understood that, good for you. If not, you should probably pay more attention in English Class.
It seems to me that the emo/scene ’season’ is over. Sort of.
I mean, seriously, what time of the year is more Emo then winter?
Lets take a look at what makes winter the perfect emo and scene season!

  • The world is icy and cold for some time, just like our hearts.
  • Hoodies and scarves are much more readily avilable in stores.
  • The clothing shades for winter seasons are usualy greys, whites, and blacks.
  • Its dark most of the day, limiting your intake of the dreaded sunlight.
  • The trees are empty and bear, deviod of all colors save for darks.
  • Fingerless gloves, striped leggings, and long coats start to look like a good idea to everyone

This makes it very easy to see why winter is a perfect season for most emo types. I mean seriously.
You can wear you skinny jeans and five shirts and a hoodie and fingerless gloves and be perfectly cozy and comfortable,
but no, heaven forbid the skorching sun shall come down and rain its deadly rays of…LIGHT upon us and make us sweltering hot
so the eyeliner melts right off her faces….
No. Winter is the perfect emo season.

Keeping the bucket safe

by flowmo at 6pm, April 7th, 2008 in General

It seems like the bucket is getting invaded every week by WoW clans and other weirdos with nothing better to do. We have an enormous number of visitors to the site daily, and everyone knows their are going to be the bad apples coming through.

As the bucket grows, we always find a new way to ensure that everyone is staying safe. This is why we have the rule against sharing personal information here ( such as phone numbers and addresses).

Today, were launching a new reporting system. You will now find report links through out the site such as on users profiles, under forum postings, and in private messages.

When you send us a report, a moderator will review it and decide what action to take. If you report a private message, a copy of the message will be sent to an administrator to review. We have made it easy for you to make these reports, and hope users will frequently use the reporting system.

We are still working on topic reports, image reports, and just general reports. These should be done by the end of the week.

This will help keep the bucket safe, and if you have any other ideas for how we can keep our members safe, feel free to post a comment letting us know!
